Verdun 1916

A major military engagement of WW1, the Battle of Verdun was a ten month fight between French and German armies. The battle was part of the unsuccesful German campaign to take the offensive on the western front. Both the French and German armies suffered massively with an estimated 540,000 French and 430,000 German casualties and no stratgetic advantages were gained. The Battle of Verdun is considered to be the worst battle of WW1.

 

                                                         Marne 1914

This battle was known as the Miracle at Marne. It was the first world war battle from september 5-12 1914. It resulted in the allies winning against the German army. The battle led to Germany advacing into France and pursuit of the allied armies. This battle led to the Battle of the Frontiers which reached the outskirts of paris.

 

                                                          Ypres 1917

The battle of ypres was cosisted of three battles. The first,1914, was attempted by the BEF to halt the rapid advances made by the germans. The second,1915, was notable for the first use of poison gas by the germans. The third,1917, was the long planned offense that holds the most significance. There were a combination of over ambitious aims, bad weather conditions,and misguided persistence by the German seargeant Haig that led to horrific losses. By the time the battle ended there had been a total of 250,000 casualties from the two sides combined.
