Planes

There were 70 different types of planes. At first airplanes were only used for observation. In the early part of the war, pilots threw bricks and rusty chains at other enemy planes. Soon, they started shooting each other with their pistols and other weapons. The first plane to be able to fire a machine gun through a propeller was the Fokker Scrourge. World War 1 was the first World War that used airplanes on a large scale. Germany had the most airplanes, France had the second most, and Great Britain had the third most.

There are people that are amazing at flying airplanes. If they get 5 confirmed kills they are known as an ace. If you weren't an ace you were considered a target. The most well known ace was Manfred von Richtofen. He was called the Red Baron. The Red Baron was the highest score with 80 confirmed kills. Erich Hartmann was the first French ace. America's top ace was Eddie. The few aces among military pilots have historically acounted for the majority of air to air victories in military history.
